Debt collectors, in an effort to obtain payment, have been known to alter credit records to fool the credit bureaus into leaving a debt on a consumer credit report rather than removing it.

What Is a Re-aged Debt?

A re-aged debt is a debt that, due to the alteration of dates, no longer adheres to the federal reporting period.

The reporting period is regulated by Section 605 of the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Each debt has a set amount of time that it may appear on a consumer’s credit report before disappearing forever. The date is dictated by the date of last activity, which is the date the debt first went delinquent plus 180 days.
