Space music? Most people think of John Williams’ Star Wars suite. Slightly older folk may start humming the music from the Start Trek tv series starring Capt. James Kirk and his fearless crew of star voyagers. But there’s a whole lot more music orbiting in space than just these two familiar tunes, and NASA is inviting everyone to sing along.

NASA “Space Rock” Offers Dual Contests

NASA is running two separate but related contests. One is an out of this world version of the popular American Idol musical contest in which viewers participate in judging by voting for their favorite singers. Thanks to the NASA contests the general public can now vote online for their favorite space shuttle wake-up music, choosing from 40 top selections used in previous shuttle flights.

The NASA space agency invites people to cast their votes online between now and November 1, 2010, at songcontest.nasa.gov. November 1 is the scheduled launch date for the next to the last shuttle flight, STS-133. (STS stands for Space Transportation System.) Winning wake-up calls will be played during that shuttle mission.
